Windows XP Wont Fully Boot

Last night my PC downloaded some updates (a problem in itselt; I normally do this manually, but that's a side issue). When I shut down, I clicked "to turn off and update" rather than "turn off without updating" and while it was shutting down the power failed.
This morning the PC wont boot all the way into Windows (it stays on the Windows XP Logo screen that displays before the login screen appears). I've tried it twice but it's just sitting there.

I've tried booting in safe mode and this is the line where it gets stuck:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windowssystem32driversMup.sys

My question are these:
1 can I restore the system without a reinstall, or
2 if not, can I reinstall the problem areas without affecting my settings and files etc

I have a full backup that I took on Wednesday night but that is problematic in itself. I have Windows XP Pro with SP2, any suggestions today would be great so I can try and get it working when I get home from work.

if you have an xp CD put it in to boot and it should give you the option to repair the installation. this won't change any of your files or anything like that.

Cheers Martin, I thought that might be the move. I'll give it a go tomorrow, playing Burnout Paradise for tonight lol.

Cheers

Well I tried various methods but after it all I just decided to restore my system from the backup (which luckily I take weekly). I had to format the hard drive, install a fresh copy of XP then restore my backup over it. So it's fully working now with only a minor bit of data loss. So, you can all get off the edge of your seat now lol

Those of you who don't already do so, *never* underestimate the power of the backup. I only lost a couple of days' data but it could have been much worse. An external hard drive and a copy of Norton Ghost of Powerquest Partition Magic will serve you well ...

I'll keep that in mind, if i ever get my own computer. right now, i keep all of my schoolwork, on my had drive, and on a jump drive. same for any programs that I want to save the setup files of, and my music. So, I have 3 different jump drives. Those at least for now, r my backups.

Ok how's this for weird. Last night i went to shut my computer down and window eyes shut off before the i had logged off and i turned it back on just to be sure it worked and it did but then i hit turn off computer and that dailog box wouldn't come up. So I shut it down and turned it on this morning and I got the system has recovered from a serious eror and something from spybot. So i told spybot not to allow whatever change it found, shut down the computer, and turned it on again, and no error dialog box.

Shawna, I remember that error you got where a file called aleaut32.dll was missing. What a bad situation!

I think a hacker was responsible.
